How to Know Your Dating Non-Negotiables

The difference between a preference and a dealbreaker is the difference between stuck and free.

"He was great, but he was too short." "She was amazing, but she didn't want to travel." We reject good partners over preferences and tolerate wrong ones over things that should have been dealbreakers. Getting this line right is one of the highest-leverage things you can do in dating.

Preference vs. non-negotiable

A preference is a nice-to-have: height, a shared hobby, a certain sense of humor. A non-negotiable is something that, if missing, will erode the relationship no matter how much you love the person — honesty, emotional availability, aligned values about family or money, kindness. Preferences are flexible. Non-negotiables are not.

How to find yours

Then hold the line

The point of knowing your non-negotiables is to act on them — to release someone kindly and early when a core one is missing, before chemistry talks you out of your own standards.
