Green Flags vs. Red Flags: How to Actually Tell the Difference
Chemistry is loud. Character is quiet. Learn to hear the quieter signal.
Early dating is noisy. Attraction, nerves, and hope drown out the small signals that actually predict whether a relationship will be healthy. Green flags and red flags aren't about grand gestures — they're about patterns of behavior you can see if you know where to look.
Green flags: move toward these
- Consistency. They act the same on day 3 as day 30. No hot-and-cold.
- They follow through. What they say and what they do match.
- They respect your boundaries the first time, without sulking.
- Emotional availability. They can name a feeling and stay in a hard conversation.
- They handle conflict calmly — repair over blame.
Red flags: move on from these
- Love-bombing then distance. Overwhelming intensity that suddenly cools.
- They dismiss your feelings or make you feel "too much."
- No accountability. Nothing is ever their fault.
- Controlling or jealous behavior dressed up as caring.
- Different core values on the things that actually run your life.
The trick most people miss
Decide your green flags and dealbreakers before you're in the room. Chemistry clouds judgment in the moment; standards set in a calm moment protect you in a heated one. A green flag isn't a preference — it's the behavior you refuse to compromise on.
